Bouddhanath Stupa

Bouddhanath Stupa is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The great majestic Buddha Stupa stands approximately 6-7 km northeast from the center of  Kathmandu. Boudhanath Stupa is 100 m is a diameter, 1 Hector in width, and 141. 16 ft in height. The area of the stupa is 6, 756 square meters. According to history; it believes that this stupa was built during the Kashyapa Buddha’s end time and the beginning time of Shakyamuni Buddha.

 

Buddhist people believe that the relics of Kashyapa Buddha, the third Buddha of Bhadrakalpa, are in the dome of this stupa. This stupa believes to be made by the mother a person who became Guru Padmasambhava in his next reincarnation. He, Guru Padmasambhava, in his own life has said that this stupa was made by his mother in his earlier incarnation.

 

World heritage site

This stupa is also one of the largest and most significant Buddhist monuments in the world. Bouddhanath stupa is religious, cultural, and archeologically very important all over the world. This stupa is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural site as in 1979. Many pilgrims and visitors come here to pray and visit. You will see many devotees silently offering their prayer, rotating the prayer wheels, and even doing full-body prostration. Also, the stupa is surrounding by many shops, varieties of handicraft shops, prayer wheels, singing bowls, etc.

 

You can also view the stupa and its religious ambiance sitting in any of the hotels, cafes, or guest houses. If you want to experience the religion closely, you can also get good hotels for the stay and during your stay, you can join the daily activities with pilgrims and monks in various monasteries and peaceful environment. You will find people chanting ”Om Mani Padme Hum” with prayer wheels and beads in their hands; going around the stupa even doing the full-body prostration.

 

The ancient heritage, Bouddhanath can be best observed on the full moon evenings when there are regular special ceremonies and the whole surrounding lightens up with thousands of butter lamps. Furthermore, there are various significant monasteries in nearby areas. A lot of festivals like Losar, Buddha Jayanti, Temal Jatra, etc celebrates at the Bouddhanath Stupa.
